As a former NCAA Division 1 Athlete, I have parents ask me quite often what their son or daughter needs to do in order to make it to the highest level of college athletics. First, mom and dad need to know where they fit in the equation to success. Parents cannot be the primary motivator. If a kid is not self-motivated to be on the field or in the gym early and often, I would say he does not have what it takes. No matter how hard a parent pushes, kids will ultimately change only if their heart is committed.

A parent must be the primary encourager, not a micro-managing know-it-all. Too many parents try to implement their own agendas in their child's lives as opposed to providing guidelines, guardrails, and "good-jobs" along the way. Second, if you are a "borderline athlete" ? not one of the top players in the nation being recruited by the top schools ? then you must focus on nutrition and training to engrain. High sugar & high fat diets are not going to help you get that extra burst of quickness that you need to beat your competition. Do not be fooled by the professional athlete on a McDonalds commercial, even professional athletes follow a strictly regimented diet.

Oddly enough, you will see some college athletes with horrible diets. Again don't be deceived; these individuals and their teams do not compete for championships. Eating right is followed by training right. Training to engrain is simply training the brain. By performing the correct sport-specific moves, positions, and exercises day in and day out, your brain will automatically react & execute in game situations.

Too many athletes waste their training time doing the wrong exercises the wrong way.Lastly, you must give your all (but not your life). In order to truly "make it" in life, you must put NCAA Division 1 in its proper place. Remember that you are in control and that it is not appropriate for sport to control you. Keep in mind, productive relationships, education, and having a positive impact on your community are top priorities. Do not let being an athlete define you, rather focus on being yourself, learn from your mistakes, and execute as best you can.

Timing and teams-needs will play a major role in where you end up, so control what's in your court and don't stress over the rest..

Thousands of companies wasted hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue last year on "Team Building" programs that didn't develop more of a team atmosphere within their organizations. The term "Team Building" has come to have so many definitions that it can mean just about anything to anybody. If a company or organization is considering investing in a team building program, the first question that needs to be asked is, "Is my group interdependent?" ? meaning does the success of each member of the group depend primarily on the success of the other members of the group? For instance, the success of the operations department might depend heavily on the success of the sales department which might depend heavily on the success of the marketing department. Conducting a team building program among the managers or employees of these departments at the same time might be beneficial. However, the success of each individual sales person will probably not depend primarily on the success of the other sales people. So, a sales manager spending money on a team building program for his/her sales people would probably be wasting time and money. If your group is interdependent, then the next question to ask is "What kind of things are happening within this group that lets me know they are not acting efficiently as a team?" or "What areas can we improve in?" You might ask more specific questions to determine individual areas for improvement such as the following: Are there areas of miscommunication that slow down processes or cause rework? Are there conflicts which bring down morale? Do departments focus on their own success at the expense of other departments? Is it tough for new employees to fit in with the experienced team members? Are changes in policy resisted by team members? Do team members feel as though they have no say in policy? The answers to any of these questions can help a team leader determine what types of team building programs might be most effective for a group.

If you find it difficult to determine the individual areas that would have the most dramatic impact on the performance of your group, realize that most professional trainers have low-cost or free assessments that can be conducted to determine these areas for a group. The next step in determining the right program for your group is to determine which programs on the market will give your team improvement in the most areas that you have identified, and which will give your team long-term improvement so that you will not have to continually repeat the training process over time.Once you have done the previous steps, this last step is pretty simple. You can do a standard internet search for training in the areas you've identified, and then check a number of references for each proposal you receive. One quick thing you can do to save time is to look only at organizations and trainers who specialize in training or team building. People and companies who can make a living specializing in this type of work will probably do pretty well, but a company specializing in the fitness industry (outdoor adventures, ropes courses,) selling beach chairs (Beach Olympics,) or driving race cars or flying airplanes probably won't create a long-term behavior change in your team.Comradery may be built and lost in an afternoon, but a team atmosphere can last for generations.

Doug Staneart, e-mail protected from spam bots is CEO of The Leader's Institute, www.buildingyourteam.com, specializing in leadership, public speaking, and team building training for individuals and groups.

You need to take the first step?I've just started training for the half marathon in Nottingham which happens in September. I find myself in a mix of excited about the possibility, and apprehensive about the challenge - it's like me to set my goals large! As I was walking home thinking about my training programme, I really started to think about how setting a goal like this is so similar to setting any kind of goal in life. It's all about the power of the first step. You could think, well, I am never going to take that first step because there are so many obstacles in the way - I have to get fit, get some kit, lose some weight, find some time, etc etc blah blah blah! I am sure you get the idea - it's like when you know you have to take action and there are so many great displacement activities - cleaning the house, answering the mail - all stuff that can wait! Yet we chose to do that rather than what we know can and will make a difference to us. What's that about!? Personally, I've been thinking about getting back out and doing some exercise for ages, and even though I coach, it's still a challenge sometimes to take that first step.

Think back to a challenge or goal that you are facing - what's stopping you taking the first step? Taking that first action takes you one step closer to your overall goal - what have you got to lose? If you don't take action today - you may never do it! This thought has even got me writing my first ezine - it's amazing how the thought "I should really practice what I preach" makes to your actions! I'd already taken some steps on this, signing up for the newsletter sight, the next step like the next step that turns into a jog, is just a step on the way. Before you know it, you're thereTaking that first step can be nerve-wracking but so, so exciting. Here are 5 tips for taking action today to achieve your goals... 1. Get ready...

set your goal by thinking about something that is really important to you. If you don't have an emotional connection to what you want to do, and feel animated about achieving it, what's the point? Set your goal in the now and the positive to help you visualise what this looks like "I'm running the half marathon...and I'm loving it!" 2. Find yourself a fun way to do it... Why do we set out to sabotage ourselves? Think with confidence about your goal, and what has worked for you in the past, and what you love to do. How can you link this to your goal? For instance - my goal of running is about 2 things - getting outside and also toning up and losing some weight (OK, that's really 3 things!) - but I hate the gym.

Therefore - I know that I need to do things to achieve my getting fit/ spending some time outside that help me with this- running, biking, walking...what works for you? 3. Set the goal that works for you - but still feels challenging. If you don't like to run - don't run! If you want to run, but the thought of a marathon or half marathon fills you with horror, don't do it! It isn't about setting the biggest or most "bragworthy" goal, but doing something that you feel excited about, in what ever area works for you 4. Decide on your first step - and do it! Don't procrastinate, don't think about it - just do it (as a well known advertiser says!) Honestly. It's so powerful you'll want to take the next step...and the next...

5. Celebrate! You've just taken the first step on the way to achieving your goal! Celebrate it, share it with a friend, shout it from the rooftops! Love the fact you are on your way!.

MAY 18, 2004 [HOPE, NJ] -- DScape Interactive, LLC, has been selected by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) to build and launch the first online training version of MADD's program, Protecting You/Protecting Me (PY/PM), a nationally-recognized alcohol prevention teacher training curriculum for children in grades 1-5. PY/PM helps reach children before they have fully shaped their attitudes and opinions about alcohol use and their role in preventing it. The curriculum focuses on the effects of alcohol on the developing brain during the first 21 years of life.DScape will develop a web-based e-learning course for PY/PM, which will prepare professional educators to deliver the PY/PM curriculum to students in first through fifth grade across the United States ? and possibly abroad. The online course will feature engaging Flash-based animations, interactive exercises, and professional narration. The course content will be organized into short, instructional modules to fit the demanding and time-pressured schedules of school staff. Learners will have 24-hour access to the course through a web browser on any computer connected to the Internet.

DScape will also provide a SCORM-compliant Learning Management System (LMS) that includes a self-registration tracking system for learners and comprehensive reporting tools for administrators. Scored assessments will validate learners' mastery of the content and, upon successful completion of the course, each learner will receive certification to teach the PY/PM curriculum. Pre- and post- course assessments will help determine the effectiveness of the course for all participants.MADD chose DScape to develop PY/PM's online course after a rigorous vendor selection process."It was a challenging process," said Kappie Bliss, Project Director for PY/PM. "What set DScape apart was their proven ability to create online content that's both engaging and memorable for all types of learners. DScape also satisfied all of our technical requirements with customizable and easy-to-use administrative tools.

We know that DScape's solution will enable us to more effectively ? and more efficiently ? train the nation's elementary school staff to help children learn about their growing brains and the developmental risks associated with exposure to alcohol before the age of 21. We're thrilled to have them as our e-learning partner." "We're very excited that MADD decided to partner with us for creating the online PY/PM course," said Mark Kaplan, senior partner at DScape. "E-learning, with its ?just in time' delivery method for large numbers of widely dispersed learners, will enable MADD to reach more prospective PY/PM instructors for the greatest benefit. It's especially gratifying to know that this program will have a real impact on kids' lives."A national rollout for the new online version of PY/PM is planned in the fall of 2004.

Encino, CA (ContentDesk) September 28, 2004 -- Congratulations, newly minted supervisor! Now, go enforce among your former peers that "no personal calls" rule you once flaunted with impunity. Redefining relationships with former co-workers can often be the most difficult task facing new supervisors and managers. But a few key strategies can ease the move into an unfamiliar role."Working with former peers is often the toughest part of making the leap to boss," says business-training expert Myron Curry, president of BusinessTrainingMedia.com. "Many people have to deal with their fear of losing friendships, reluctance to disciplining a former peer or avoiding the appearance of favoritism."A new training program available from BusinessTrainingMedia.com addresses that dilemma. Peer Today, Boss Tomorrow helps new managers and supervisors navigate changing relationships and prepare for the most difficult situations they're likely to encounter as they assume a new role.

According to Curry, four key strategies presented and applied in the program can ease the transition from peer to boss: 1. Accepting the responsibilities of the new role. 2. Exercising abilities to set clear boundaries with former peers. 3.

Strengthening communication skills. 4. Taking thoughtful and strategic action when necessary. Peer Today, Boss Tomorrow is available in a free preview package. The program includes a video and Facilitator Guide with agenda options, reproducible participant materials, reproducible Self-Study Workbook and PowerPoint presentation for download.

To find out more, visit www.businesstrainingmedia.com or call 1-888-337-2121.About BusinessTrainingMedia.comFormed in 1998, BusinessTrainingMedia.com provides workforce and business-development training programs designed exclusively for corporate trainers, managers, executives, educators, entrepreneurs, law enforcement and human resource professionals.
